CHAPTER TEN

They had some theories, but they needed daylight to prove them. Wyatt forced his steps to be silent as he climbed the stairs to his apartment. He unlocked the door and breathed deep, trying to find his mate. Needing her to calm him. Noah lifted his head from the chair and nodded toward the couch. Poppy was sound asleep with a throw blanket over her. He met his cousin in the kitchen.

“The other two are asleep in your spare room. Your mate fought sleep hard, but in the end she crashed.” Wyatt confessed what Poppy was the night before. Not that Noah hadn’t put the pieces together when he found him struggling to shift back in the woods after Poppy ran past him.

“She didn’t sleep at all last night. Thanks for staying.”

“I’m still staying.”

Wyatt frowned. But when Noah glanced down the hall, recognition dawned. “The couch is yours. I’m taking Poppy to bed.”

“Thanks. What did you find out?”

“We think the killer hung him over a cliff.” There were enough of them around, but none were close to where they found the body.

“What?” Disgust twisted Noah’s features.

“Deep rope burns on his on wrists and ankles. His face was smashed in and he had several head wounds. Similar contusions on his shoulders, arms, back, legs. Like they used him as a pendulum. But it’s just a theory.”

“Hell of a theory.”

“Yeah.” They’d tried to concoct all the ways to cause that damage. Dragging him through the woods, but there was particular blood pooling that made them think they hung him upside down. And his clothes lacked long tears. “We’re searching for where in the morning.”

“I don’t like this.” Noah’s growl mirrored the one simmering in Wyatt’s chest. The weight of dread, of something evil bared down.

“Neither do I.” This was too close to his mate. Let alone, someone capable of this viciousness was in their town. They’d all keep their eyes, ears, and noses open. The death was personal. Two suspects were at the top of the list. Wyatt had cleared Poppy, Blair, and Harlyn from the suspect list. They’d been in his apartment all night and had walked to the bakery together that morning.

Wyatt walked over to his mate. She’d tucked the blanket under her chin, tight in her fists. He peeled it back and passed it to Noah over the back of the couch. With his arms under her legs and back, Wyatt cradled her against his chest.

“You’re home.” Poppy nuzzled against him, but didn’t open her eyes. Nodding a goodnight to his cousin, Wyatt carried his mate down the hall. He stopped outside the spare room to listen to the light breathing of her friends from the other side.

His bedroom door was open. Shouldering his way in, he kicked it shut.

Wyatt struggled to control the thoughts of the danger his mate had been in by being with that asshole. Even being on this trip with him put her in danger. But it had also brought her to him. The image of twin ropes stretched over a cliff swung back and forth in his vision.
